Hello, Maproom!
Tip: Add categories to your images
Tip: Add categories to your images

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

File:World_map_indicating_tropics_and_subtropics.png[edit]

Hi Maproom, I noticed you changed my image, but I'm not sure why. You mentioned that the 68° lines were incorrect, but there don't appear to be any 68° lines in the original image, so not sure what was wrong with it. Can you check and possibly restore my old version (just undo your new versions) KVDP (talk) 14:36, 21 January 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi KDVP,
When I wrote 68° I meant 38°. I removed the labels saying 38°. I did this in response to a complaint (I forget where, maybe the Help desk on en:Wikipedia) saying that the lines were in the wrong place. I decided that in fact the lines were in the right place to show the conventional limits of the tropics, but were wrongly labelled "38°". You can see that they were originally wrong by checking where the northern dotted line crosses the coastlines of California and of Morocco; it is 35° north. Picture of the Year 2013 R1 Announcement[edit]

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open![edit]

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on 7 February 2014. Click here to learn more and vote »

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Thanks for uploading File:Jeju City location map.png. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

No required license templates were detected at this file page. Please correct it, or if you have any questions please contact me on my talk page. Yours sincerely, Jarekt (talk) 12:03, 23 April 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Male and female life expectancy maps[edit]

Hi Maproom, on a en.wp talk page a user brought up and interesting point about File:Male Life Expectancy.png and File:Female Life Expectancy.png: they have completely different scales. This makes it somewhat difficult to visually compare the two, and most noticeable skews Russia's figures. I was wondering if it would be possible to equalise these, perhaps by making both scales 40 to 85 (or 90). Thanks in advance! Huntster (t @ c) 21:47, 7 January 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Re: File:Democratic Party presidential primaries results, 2016.svg[edit]

Thanks for the link to the discussion! Sorry, I wasn't aware of this particular request. However, the D.A. cartogram was inserted (I believe) 2 months or so ago, and at the time we had a bit of a discussion on the primary article (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Democratic_Party_presidential_primaries,_2016/Archive_3#The_Map_-_something_should_not_be_there) Fair point... although I suppose from my personal point of view, given that the box is somewhat adjacent to the territories, and given it is an election map of the democratic primaries, it shouldn't have been too difficult of a conclusion to reach. But then again, I do have a personal bias towards clean cartographic representations over the need for any text. The best forum for this should probably still be the discussion pages of the primary article I suppose. Sleepingstar (talk) 04:53, 18 May 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Your removal of words, I can understand. But I think a stylised globe would be clearer than something that can be mistaken for a location-map inset. I'll have a look at the discussion. Maproom (talk) 06:39, 18 May 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks for your response. Personally, I wouldn't mind a stylised globe (as long as there is no text on the map). But indeed, it may be time to open up a discussion on the primary article pages. Sleepingstar (talk) 00:13, 19 May 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Arabia 600 AD Map minor detail[edit]

The map looks correct, especially in the desert regions where its hard to trace Bedouin tribal movements. I think you mistyped Ma'afir & 'Ans in each other spots, as

  • Ma'afir is between Taiz, Bab al-Mandab & Aden (Ma'afir the tribe/region Mofarite not be confused with the Y'ufrid dynasty)
  • 'Ans covers most the land between Dhamar & Ibb

'Ans & Ma'afir should be reversed I think its a typo Tiwahi (talk) 12:27, 25 November 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Tiwahi: all I have done with this map is to colour Persia the Sassanid Empire green. But I could easily swap the positions of 'Ans and Ma'afir, if you can confirm that this is what you want. Maproom (talk) 18:03, 25 November 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Request[edit]

Hello.

If you are interested and have the time, would you like to look at my requests I put in Commons:Graphic Lab/Map workshop: Time zone maps of Europe.

Thank you.

Maphobbyist (talk) 20:33, 3 January 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Maphobbyist: you've presented 11 maps there, some of them clearly inconsistent with others. I'm certainly not updating all of them. I would be willing to update one of them, preferably the second.Maproom (talk) 14:07, 6 January 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Can you at least check the first four Europe time zone files?
File:Time zones of Europe.svg is clearly a duplicate (even though it has a smaller resolution) of File:Time zones in Europe.svg, because the former was created a month after the latter, and the former has not been updated since September 2016 and both files are used by many Wikipedia articles. Could you redirect at least File:Time zones of Europe.svg to the larger resolution File:Time zones in Europe.svg (which I "updated" by reverting to the current up to date version, the only thing I can do with SVG files)? The unused File:Time zones of Europe.png has also not been updated since 2016, and is identical the two aforementioned SVG files. In this PNG file and in File:Time zones of Europe (Crimea disputed).svg all of Cyprus needs to be colored in beige as Northern Cyprus reverted back to UTC +2 and DST. In the PNG file Turkey needs to be colored in green, because it permanently abolished DST and switched to UTC +2. Any recommendations for the PNG file? The problem is that users who originally upload these files are either inactive for long periods or have retired, and the files remain obsolete. Maphobbyist (talk) 16:23, 6 January 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]
This all sounds like a lot of stuff that I don't know how to do. I don't even know how to redirect a file. If you specify one file (preferably SVG but could be PNG etc.), and an exact list of the changes you want made to it, I'll do it. Any more than that: no. Maproom (talk) 20:45, 6 January 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I recommend File:Time zones of Europe (Crimea disputed).svg because only Northern Cyprus needs an update. The whole of Cyprus needs to be colored in beige, because Northern Cyprus reverted to UTC +2 and DST (after a one year try) in October 2017. Source: https://www.timeanddate.com/news/time/
P.S. I have also updated the unused PNG file and duplicate File:Time zones of Europe.png today, which I personally think is superfluous. In File:Time zones of Europe.svg also only Northern Cyprus needs to be updated. Maphobbyist (talk) 12:44, 7 January 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hello. Could you update File:Time zones of Europe.svg where only Northern Cyprus needs to be colored in beige like the rest of Cyprus? This is the only file left which needs one update. (I have managed to "update" File:Time zones of Europe (Crimea disputed).svg by a simple revert.) Maphobbyist (talk) 21:31, 18 January 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Correction requests[edit]

Hello, Maproom.

There are mistakes in these maps which have not been undone. Would you correct them?

In both File:Christian States.svg and File:State Religions.svg, El Salvador is wrongly included, which needs to be removed because it doesn't have a state religion. Article 26 of the Constitution of El Salvador does not declare the Catholic Church as a state religion: "The juridical personality of the Catholic Church is recognized. The other churches may obtain recognition of their personality in conformity with the law". Source: http://confinder.richmond.edu/admin/docs/ElSalvador1983English.pdf

In File:Map of state religions.svg, Georgia is wrongly included, which needs to be removed because it doesn't have a state religion. Section 1 of Article 9 of the Constitution of Georgia does not declare the Georgian Orthodox Church as a state religion: "The state shall declare complete freedom of belief and religion, as well as shall recognise the special role of the Apostle Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Georgia in the history of Georgia and its independence from the state." Source: http://www.parliament.ge/files/68_1944_951190_CONSTIT_27_12.06.pdf

In File:Paises con mayoría cristiana.svg Nakchivan needs to be painted in pink, because it is an exclave of Azerbaijan, and like Azerbaijan as a whole, Nakchivan doesn't have a Christian majority.

Artoxx (talk) 21:53, 29 January 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Your request about Nakchivan is clearly correct. I'll get round to it when I have time.
The other two requests are more dubious. You state that the constitutions of El Salvador and Georgia each assign a unique status to a specified religion.
I'm surprised to see that while the first two maps you mention show England as having a Christian state religion (which is true, though it's barely noticeable when you live here), they show Wales and Scotland as not having one. Maybe that's now correct; I'll have to check. Maproom (talk) 00:25, 30 January 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I find the map is right about Wales and Scotland. Each has a "national religion", but neither has an "established religion" like England.
I have struggled with File:Paises con mayoría cristiana.svg. It is a 2 MB file with no comments or country namesidentifiers, and the countries are not listed in any obvious order. I have failed to find the line of code which represents Nakchivan.
I am not convinced by the need to change File:Christian States.svg or File:State Religions.svg. Neither has a talk page explaining exactly what it is intended to show, and Georgia and El Salvador each explicitly mention a single Christian religion in their constitutions. In any case, the former map is used in only one Wikipedia, and the latter in none. Maproom (talk) 11:03, 30 January 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]
